However, GoDaddy charges for them. Price Comparison: To test this point, I decided to compare the price difference for the following test domain: domain GoDaddy makes people think that their domain sales are cheap, but in reality their more expensive and full of sneaky, automatic opt-in upsells.
Which basically means that as a developer, it takes me more time which often means more expensive for clients to complete tasks. If I want to deliver results for my client, I need the flexibility and ease of use that an industry standard admin interface, like cPanel, provides.
Unfortunately, GoDaddy gives users a proprietary admin interface that is more interested in selling you more GoDaddy products than in giving you the tools you need. Their blog is a perfect description of the disappointments and issues with GoDaddy Hosting. GoDaddy has notoriously published one of the most awkward, inappropriate Super Bowl Advertisements in the history of the planet.
Furthermore, they have published advertisements that have been overtly sexual in many ways, with AdAge. I have been a customer for over 10 years, and recently purchased a new domain product.
In 3 days, I have received over spam emails to my account email in regards to this domain, many of which are disguised as urgent. I have also received 6 phone calls, and several pieces of paper mail at my home address. The fact that you ask people to pay you money to prevent this is essentially extortion. I will be transitioning all my products to another company. Hello knutsonpro. First, I would like to say that I'm sorry for what happened to you. I'm a customer of GoDaddy from and, in part, I agree with you.
In the last year or so, whenever I've registered a new domain, I got emails with all kind of offers, usually from the same companies but never from GoDaddy. For me it was easy to add those email to my spam filter and now they don't bother me anymore. Do you really think that it is in GoDaddy's interest to keep his clients under stress? The domain registration data are public so anyone can see them.
The Domain Privacy service has appeared only to protect your identity from those who abuse the registration information. I will never do business with Godaddy ever again. The day after buying and renewing some domains I was bombarded with spam fron Indians wanting to build me websites. In 5 days I recieved 47 emails. Godaddy is done in my book. Not one more penny will I spend here! It's just how you deal with them that counts. I just put filters on my email, they mostly go straight in the bin.
I had my phone ringing off the hook, I just bought a BT phone that blocks withheld numbers, the ones that try and get clever and show the number, they have to announce their name. I don't know a 'David Beckham' or 'Jenifer Lopez', they don't get through. But they must sit watching whois with a script that see's new registrants from Godaddy and it's jolly time.
They don't seem to bother me that much. I think they go more after Wordpress users. It is bloody annoying though. Not ever before has my data been misused right after I signed up. I have a private domain and I create a new email address for every site I sign up to. About 40 spam emails and 12 spam text messages since yesterday evening.
Someone else told me he had the same problem, so that I would like to know:. Are you selling our data? Or why did that never happen before? Hi wolke8 ,. That's a fair question, but the answer is probably a "Why would they need to? It makes much more sense that Godaddy new customers are targeted because of the success of Godaddy. There is software out there that can spy on new registrants. You can and should report any spam to: for the US:. There are similar governmental bodies too for other countries.
Just search for where to complain about spam. If they get enough complaints about someone, they will close down their server, or account.
It even happens here at Godaddy at times. There are quite a few who have been reported for spam, where godaddy has been proactive and closed their service.
If you can get a website domain from their email without clicking any links of course , then turn their own weapons against them. Do a whois and you will find an 'abuse' email to send a message regarding abuse. Even if they try and hide behind privacy, the provider will have a ref number in there that identifies the person responsible. Or, for an easier time of it, just set up better spam filters on your inbox.
Thank you for taking the time to read and comment. I am finding the exact same thing, I have had over 50 emails in 3 days and they are actually referring to the domain name so they definitely are getting all of the information they need to spam their services.
It's so frustrating. Over the years I have had numerous domain names and never experienced this amount of spam before. So all I had to do was buy a service from you and you sold my info in less than 48 hours? To make matters worse I've not even used the service yet So, thanks a lot! I don't want hear pseudo reasons for why you're "not at fault". This is extremely annoying and I will make sure that I not only not recommend your company to anyone but also strongly advised against it.
This is extremely disappointing. Hi sappy00 ,. Godaddy have no need to sell peoples data. Some probably giving their users heads up when a newbie buys a domain. Spam is annoying, cold calls are annoying, but there are very easy ways to avoid this. Being in the worlds eye with websites and domains brings benefits and pitfalls too. We just have to take precautions against the pitfalls. I myself bought a BT phone I live in Scotland, though BT are worldwide, much as a lot of British companies , and it stops dead every single withheld number.
Every other none known person has to leave their name, no name, no call. I then decide if the number should be blocked. They will not get through if I do. My email, it's so, so easy putting spam filters to work. I get very, very little spam. Security doesn't and shouldn't stop with your database or site. But casting aspersions does nobody any good at all. Do you think it only happened to you? Everyone here in this forum has dealt with it. I feel sorry for poverty stricken countries, but not for the annoying spammers.
Unbelievable, I didn't want to pay anything for any extras - including for the privacy - and exactly after 3 days of my new domain registration I am being flooded by telemarketing calls and spam emails especially annoying because I am currently in China! I registered another domain with another service a few months ago and I haven't received a single call or spam email. I previously registered 50 domains with goDaddy and never bought keep private option but even they didn't email from the spammer.
But yesterday I registered domain, got hundreds of email from spammer. Here is email I got. I should putting content of email out there, so people would stop doing business with these companies. We Deal in websites with integration of:. Where in end customers and sub agencies can book online. You can choose over various templates or customize design with us.
Please reply and I would be happy to share our prices, past work details. I don't know if it's something that's changed at GoDaddy I shouldn't have to use Private Registration, or jump through hoops to set up special email addresses and phone numbers to protect my privacy. It looks like there are websites which offer access to lists of domain names that have just been registered or have just expired with all of their information from whois.
It's pretty greasy in general but I don't know if any laws are being broke. Might be something someone needs to address and have changed. Any chance of a class action law suit?
Below is an example of such a website. Yes they are, I had bought many domains with other companies, bought one with go daddy and I had been spammed since then People now thinking not to recommend Godaddy to anyone because the support is the worst than any other, neither Hostgator nor the Bigrock in India, even both are having Toll Free numbers to help their customers, but Godaddy?
Hi mantosh ,. I only though pay for the call to Glasgow as seen on my bill, toll free. In in the meanwhile I would try using the online chat instead. Arizona local time 5am to 6pm. As a side note and not in any way derogatory to Godaddy or anyone. I always would try to use businesses local to me or as local as possible.
I often hear complaints about either language barriers or phone calls etc and wonder why they didn't just choose a company from their own country to make life easier. I guess certain companies are just more reliable in service or features than others. There is always someone prepared to do things cheaper, but they always cut corners.
It's a balance between paying a premium price for an exclusive service, and paying an affordable price for a reasonable service. I am a freelance developer, any of my clients can have my personal attention at most reasonable times of day where they get personal service. But I don't charge what MacDonalds pay their staff!!! So in order to give customers what they want and keep costs low at the same time, well I can think of far worse companies than Godaddy to be honest.
We all pay our money and make our choices. It's all a balance of supply and demand. This is very suspicious indeed, I understand because I have not added privacy to my domains people have access to my information, but how come they get that access so soon, how do they know that domain name exists all of a sudden. This morning I was welcomed by 20 emails offering web development for my latest domain registered. Is godaddy forwarding this information on to these people in order to make customers buy the privacy for their domains?
This is beyond suspicious now and it is getting annoying FAST. Sorry I do not accept this, I accept if there was a domain for the sake of argument www.
However your answer seems to side track my original question, I will repeat it, how come they have access to the domain name before its even online or only a few days old. Where are they getting this info from? WHO is giving them this database? If I have not made the domain known, if I have not uploaded a site with the name, where or who is giving them this information?
The second question, has godaddy got a security flaw dishing out our personal information to these people? The conspiracists abound, but the truth is more boring Well conspiracies aside, there is something that's just not right going on here and it needs to be looked into To be honest, I have no idea how marketers and phishers do it. Fresh domains do mean opportunity though as it would usually mean a website is on the way.
Working in tech for as long as I have I've learned that there are many ways to find information when needed. I would suggest private registration no matter where you register your domains. Or as Retired stated, a simple spam filter will weed out most of the emails if you don't mind to have your registrant information listed. Make no mistake, I'm not interested in relieving the symptoms, but purely in understanding the cause of the problem Where the hell are they getting the info from??? Do you not care about the problem on behalf of your customers, unless they pay extra???
I'd like to add to this. Since then my junk mail has been flooded with spam specifically related to my website and Godaddy and I'm not pleased, it hardly inspires me to continue with this service after the 30 day trial. If GoDaddy are not selling our information or complicit then they are not doing enough to protect it. I did see an option to make my domain private when I purchased it, but Godaddy wanted to charge me extra for that.
I don't see why it charges to obfuscate data, I work in software development and this practice is standard for hiding personal data and very easy to do. I'll look at my website options and see if there's anyway to make my details more private or to stop the spam but I think this is very shoddy customer service if Godaddy are simply going to say it's not our fault and there's nothing we can do. Same thing as most others have experienced.
I've registered many domains and never experienced anything like this. I have been inundated with spam since shortly after registering this last one. I purchased the privacy as soon as I started getting flooded, but apparently it was too late because they are still rolling in. I'm also getting telemarketing calls daily from Go Daddy I guess it's true, you get what you pay for. I blame nobody but myself on this one.
I should have known better than to do business with GD. I've advised clients for years to steer clear, but honestly figured "how bad can you mess up registering a domain??
Lesson learned. Is there a way to NOT have our email shared by go-daddy? I have not given out our new email address and I already have 1, emails. Hi sandeepthaliyil ,. This topic is becoming really boring , and it should be banned from the forum It's very easy to see that there are unscrupulous websites out there who will offer daily updates on newly registered domains, not only that, but judging by some responses on forums not here there is actually a demand.
A quick search produced the following:. All I typed into the search bar was 'where can I find a list of newly registered domain names? You can do it for free if you are prepared for a bit of work! I suggest you apply intelligent spam filters and batten down the hatches, it will blow over soon as you don't respond.
Remember they are fishing and looking for a bite. I registered a domain with you recently after constant email spam nearly daily to my account. You then sold my information to 3rd parties and called me daily for the previous 6 days trying to up-sell me on your website builder. I asked to be removed from your call list on 3 occasions.
I am a professional software and web developer, I do not have time to answer calls from Indians pretending to be Australian and asking me questions with regards to my web builder requirements. After attempting to navigate your IVR, I gave up after being on hold for 17min. If I receive another call from you, I will contact the telecommunications ombudsman.
Hi Accolade ,. Just try a google search, "how do I find a list of newly registered domains? It's easy to see where the spammers get their info, and it's NOT godaddy. Incidentally, calling names and throwing assertions around without hard proof, or making threats, is not 'professional' I purchased a domain from Godaddy and now my email inbox is full of spam from website designers in India and China offering services. How is it that they got my email address from Godaddy? It's really frustrating to say the least where I am now getting over 20 spam emails a day from just purchasing a domain name.
I purchased a domain from GoDaddy several years ago, ran the website for 4 or 5 years with zero problem. This year, I dropped that domain and switched to a new one, and almost immediately, the phone calls began.
Their solution? Pay us for privacy? I don't think so. I didnt get the first spam phone call for 5 years, and now all of the sudden I need to pay GoDaddy to keep some random person in California from calling my phone 3 times a day?? I may pay somebody, but it won't be GoDaddy! I believe this is a revenue scam that Godaddy is using to force people to pay, to prevent spam. How much is GoDaddy making on the information they are selling to the spammers?
Sorry just you and the Area 51 alien cover up conspiracy theorists!! This is just troublemaking because anyone can just type in to google search bar "How can I get daily updates on newly registered domains Godaddy are not on the list The larger issue is these spam companies are buying the database listings.
So these spam companies buy the public listings. I cant afford to have privacy on all of them with the amount I own. I keep getting emails and phone calls from people saying i need to register my domain name. Hi HappyGoQuilting ,. They will offer SEO search engine optimisation or website build and take your money and run, or offer shoddy work for a lot of money. By the way, don't forget your '. If unsure of any email or phone call, contact support! Is this correct?
Well, according to the GoDaddy rep who replied to my query above, it seems there ARE some alternative solutions. Both require additional, perpetual fees. The other alternative mentioned was the email forwarding, allowing receipt of email to a number of "aliases" you can set up on your domain, which forward the email to an email address you CURRENTLY use.
Drawback there is that you cannot SEND email from your domain with this method. But that might actually be enough of a solution for me. Plus, they did mention that, per the thread of emails which were less than enthusiastic about being backed into , management would revisit consideration of a FREE email that could be bundled again with the purchase of domains.
I am actually quite happy with the response, despite having to press to get one that offered alternatives. And I thank those who responded to the thread with like concerns about having to deal with as the only solution which was being discussed. I appreciate GoDaddy's response; and I will try the email forwarding mechanism to see if it solves my concern, and will report back on this thread as to if, and how well, it works.
I wish I had read this thread before I purchased an Office email account for a client. It wasn't clear at all that this was an email linked to Office - we currently live and work in Laos where it's not possible to use Office A forwarding address isn't really enough - my client needs an actual box. This is why I created a Pro account which unfortunately now seems to have exactly the same features as a regular GoDaddy account.
We are using a managed WordPress account and if Office is the only option for an actual email account not forwarding then it's probably time to look for another host. When available a session can be started through the chat buttons on the top or bottom of this page. I have the domain name I want purchased through godaddy. For now I just need e-mail, until the website is designed. I absolutely, positively, will not use the Office service, and absolutely have to send and receive from the e-mail service.
No Office , must send and receive. Godaddy domain. What will work? Hey Nuseerz. The domain by itself only has an email forwarding account credit available which redirects messages sent to the address to another existing email account. This won't allow sending and receiving from the address as there's no actual mailbox. Did you have a hosting plan or other site service purchased with your domain? Some of these include other mailing options such as Workspace or cPanel email accounts you can setup.
I have the same problem. I naively thought that in minimum one email address still comes with the purchase of a domain. That this isn't the case is really disturbing. I will avoid GoDaddy in the future as this is clearly not user friendly at all. After having mistakenly bought the domain at GoDaddy, the domain can be transferred to services that provide a free email address to the domain. Because I need just an email to the domain, that's what I have to do now.
Next time I know better and will save also this effort. It seems like several times a week, at least when I check, that the site that I paid for is performing terribly. It takes 40 seconds to load the about page, just moving tabs on the site. There aren't any special javascript effects, or animations, or even content.
This is a basic text only site. This is completely unacceptable. Everytime I call in about this, the support staff denies there being an issue. Or is unwilling to fix the issue. I get the impression that Godaddy's main concern is "solving the problem on the first call" aka dismiss your issue.
That is why godaddy doesn't provide an email for continued communication on a problem. Completely useless service. Cheezburger Network. NoDaddy Michael Schade. Wikipedia is one of several high profile sites threatening action over GoDaddy's policy. Neutral stance. Boycott pledge. Published 16 November Published 8 March Published 21 December
