When Sheffield's parent organization, the Fairbanks Morse Company, inquired as to whether die cast metals could be manufactured to form standard size bearings, Muzzy and Lyon began working on a method.
They purchased a typecasting machine, and, by modifying it, they were able to make some of the new parts themselves, while commissioning various machine shops to produce the rest. The design and construction of Muzzy's and Lyon's new machine remained a secret, and while the partners had limited mechanical and engineering experience, the machine proved successful. The potential of the die casting machine so impressed the partners that they decided to drop the mill supply business completely.
The company would devote its entire resources to manufacturing and mechanizing automotive bearings and Babbitt metals. They sold their products under the brand names of "Duro" made according to a purchased formula and "Mogul" their own formula developed by Muzzy and Lyon. Orders for their die cast bearings began to arrive, and, in , an important order was placed for 10, connecting rod bearings for the massive Buick 10, one of the first cars to use parts produced by Mogul Metal.
That year, the partners nearly lost a large order from the Hudson Motor Company, when they refused to compromise their secret processes by allowing Hudson engineers to inspect the plant. In , Muzzy learned that Douglas-Dahlin, a large Kansas City-based parts distributor, stood in danger of bankruptcy while owing Mogul a large sum of money. Reynolds, vice-president of Federal Bearing and Bushing, which also stood to lose money, called Muzzy to discuss the situation, proposing a trip to Kansas City to protect their interests.
When Muzzy and Reynolds began discussing their companies and assessing their relative strengths and weaknesses, they realized the advantages of a merger. The Federal Bearing employees were expert bronze foundrymen but lacked the capacity to produce Babbitt. Muzzy-Lyon, on the other hand, operated a complete Babbitt foundry but purchased bronze on the market.
The companies merged in , taking the name Federal-Mogul Corporation. To protect its investments, Federal-Mogul took over the near-bankrupt Douglas-Dahlin Company, entering the parts distribution business. In , Federal-Mogul purchased U. Bearings Company, an Indiana distributor that resold replacement bearings.
The following year, Federal-Mogul's involvement in the service business increased substantially with the acquisition of the Watkins Manufacturing Company of Wichita, Kansas. In , the corporation acquired the Indianapolis-based Superior Bearings Company, and, in , the service division went international with the acquisition of the former Watkins Rebabbitting Limited, with Canadian locations in Toronto, Montreal, and Winnipeg.
By , Federal-Mogul was operating 53 service branches across the North American continent. World War II led to further expansion. By , Federal-Mogul had over 50 facilities devoted to military production, turning out millions of bearings, bushings, and seals for military applications.
The company's marine division won highly competitive U. Navy tests for PT boat propellers and secured orders for over 24, Super Equi-poise wheels for every PT boat propeller used by all the Allied navies, including that of the Soviet Union. The marine division grew from a workforce of 50 in to nearly 1, by the end of the war. Moreover, from September to July , the total area of Federal-Mogul plants increased nearly threefold, and annual sales were more than double the best prewar amounts.
The new, integrated joint venture will have 10 bearing production lines in total instead of the current 6. In addition, it will introduce an environmentally friendly IrOx coating line from overseas to further improve its bearing production capacity.
By December , the two joint ventures will transfer their production lines to the new plant, which is expected to be completed by November Federal-Mogul Shanghai Bearing has increased its sales by an average of 30 percent each year over the past three years.
From news releases issued by multiple sources on December 14, TPR Co. Plans are to double its capacity in the U. In response to growing use of engine blocks made of lightweight aluminum alloy, the company is developing and producing the ASLOCK cylinder liner. The new technology requires a special processing on the outside of the liner to increase adhesion to the engine block. In May this year, the company is going to launch operations at its new plant in Tennessee, U. With this expansion, TPR's monthly production capacity in the U.
While expanding supply to Japanese automakers, the company is looking to start supplying the new cylinder liners to U. Meanwhile in China, the company is going to install a new production line at its subsidiary in Anhui Province to raise its monthly capacity to 1. This will allow the Chinese subsidiary to meet growing demand from Chinese local automakers as well as facilities of the U. From an article in the Nikkan Jidosha Shimbun on Jan. From a press release on July 2, Federal-Mogul Corporation has developed a range of zero-copper and low-copper brake pad formulations using a new tribological fingerprinting process. As companies work to introduce alternative materials ahead of legal deadlines, Federal-Mogul's Eco-Friction TM is already achieving excellent results in customer trials.
Federal-Mogul's tribological fingerprinting process develops datasets for each of the raw materials that make up a brake pad. The company's scientists then used knowledge of copper's tribological fingerprint, and how its function changes as the brake pad heats and cools, to screen 1, raw materials and identify alternative materials with the same wear and friction pattern across the same temperature range.
There is no single material that can replace copper. Brake pads are a formulation of 20 to 30 different materials, each with different functions. Federal-Mogul's Eco-Friction range uses a variety of metal sulphides, minerals, abrasives, fibers, ceramic particles and types of graphite to achieve the same wear and friction characteristics as brake pads containing copper.
Legislation in certain states of the U. From a press release on June 25, Federal-Mogul Corporation has developed an aluminium piston that meets the higher strength and thermal performance demands of very high-power diesel engines. BMW is the first to use the piston in its triple-turbo 3. The aluminium piston's design uses the company's Durabowl R process to create a reinforced combustion bowl rim to withstand the high mechanical and thermal loads.
The piston was developed at Federal-Mogul's centre for aluminium piston development and production in Nuremberg, Germany. The company produces steel and aluminium pistons for light and heavy-duty diesel engines. From a press release on June 19, Federal-Mogul Corporation has enhanced its line of Thermflex R exhaust insulating sleeves. The optimized design can now be tailored to fit any combination of exhaust pipe and tube geometries.
Federal-Mogul's Thermflex insulating sleeve traps heat within the exhaust system, allowing for greater efficiency of the emissions control systems. The Thermflex product line is constructed with basalt yarns, designed to withstand temperatures up to degrees Celsius, which reduces the radiation of heat to nearby components. The Thermflex design allows for the sleeve diameter to expand up to 1.
Once the prototype design has been validated, it can be instantly transferred into production at a Federal-Mogul's Systems Protection manufacturing facility. From a press release on May 23, The new production company will be capitalized at 20 million dollars approximately 1.
